Overview

Common Opensource LMS Systems may be viable alternatives to the costly proprietary LMS systems available in the market.  LMS which stands for Learning Management Systems are platforms that provides virtual learning environments to schools.

Moreover, there are so many platforms to choose from and establish LMS platforms within schools. However, it may be cost effective to rely on the OpenSource systems. These systems are able to run in different platforms. In this short note, I will walk you through some of the most common LMS systems available in the academics sector.

Moodle

Moodle is popular and extensive open-source LMS. It has a large community and partner network base. Moreover, it provides a wide range of features to facilitate the online learning process. Furthermore, It is collaborative based learning platform and highly applicable in education and training platforms. It’s massive multilingual and interactive platform and is the most adopted open-source LMS.

ILIAS

ILIAS (Integrated Learning Information and Cooperation System) is a web-based open-source LMS which consists of tools for learning, authoring, information accessing, and cooperative activities among communities. Moreover, it provides an integrated environment for learning and teaching, preparing and publishing courses online.

ATutor

ATutor is web-based open-source learning platform and is compliant to many educational standards. In addition, it mainly complies with SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) and IMS (Integrated Management System) interoperability standards. Besides, it is easy to use platform with good content management features for instructors to develop courses and deploy it online for their learners to make different course work activities.

Sakai

Educational institutes, organizations, individuals and other communities has developed Sakai with the goal of establishing a common collaborative learning environment. In addition, the standard set of tools of Sakai provide versatile support for teaching and learning, communication, collaboration, content and media integration, and administration. It is one of the scalable, reliable, interoperable, manageable and extensible learning platforms.
