Cybersecurity is a field that focuses on protecting information systems, networks, programs, physical environments, data and related things from cyberattacks. These cyberattacks mainly have the potential of compromising the confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) of those mentioned and others. Besides, the CIA concepts are considered the pillars of cybersecurity and all the endeavors people or organizations do is to achieve these objectives.
Confidentiality focuses on protecting unauthorized disclosure of sensitive and critical organizational or personal assets. While integrity concerns itself with preventing unauthorized modification or tampering of personal or organizational data. Whereas the availability objective is tasked with providing timely and uninterrupted services to entities.
Due to the proliferation of devices, cybersecurity has become the forefront field that protects information stored in those electronic devices. People nowadays store sensitive and private personal data in their smart devices. These data repositories therefore demand robust security controls to avoid falling in the wrong hands.
Cybersecurity is not a technical jargon of security controls though. Rather, it is a strategic taking that shapes the success or failure of businesses depending on its adoption strategies. Cybersecurity is no more an issue of the information security or IT departments, rather it is an issue that has gained a seat in the boardrooms and high level management meetings. Without the involvement of cybersecurity, modern business ventures will not succeed their goals. That is why we say it is strategic issue rather than tactical or operational one.

The major components of cybersecurity include, but not limited to, risk management, security governance, network security, cloud security, application security, database security, physical security, industrial security, to name a few.
Last but least, cybersecurity demands the integration and orchestration of people, processes and technologies (PPT) to achieve organizational goals and missions. It is not more a technical people’s responsibility only. Instead, cybersecurity is the role of every individual in an organization.
Common cybersecurity threats include malware, phishing, social engineering, criminal hacking masquerading, ransomware, APTs, espionage, Trojan horse, denial of services (DoS) and so on attacks. Cybersecurity is a realm that is tasked with protecting organizations and individuals from these nefarious attacks and more.
