Data sovereignty is the concept that, once information has been digitized into a binary form and stored as digital files, it is subject to the laws of a jurisdiction within which the storage device resides. Due to the proliferation of cloud computing environments, data sovereignty is an important consideration especially if there are laws, regulations and compliance requirements in the industry that demand data to remain in the specific jurisdiction of data origin. Furthermore, it can have an impact on the confidentiality, privacy and accessibility of data in a given situation. Besides, data sovereignty refers to the concept of data that is stored somewhere outside of an organization’s jurisdiction in which the data will still be subject to the laws and regulations of the country where it is stored.
