Data warehouse is a central repository where data from different data sources are stored. It stores current and historical dimensional data for the purpose of creating analytical reports for knowledge workers.
Data mart is a simple form of a data warehouse that is focused on a single subject or functional area. And data mart can be independent or dependent. Dependent data mart’s are created from enterprise data warehouse.
Below are some of the differences between data warehouse and data mart:
- Data warehouse is an enterprise-wide data whereas data mart is department-wide data.
- Data warehouse focuses on multiple subject areas whereas data mart focuses on a single subject area.
- Data warehouse takes more time and resource to build whereas data mart needs less time and resource to build.
- Data warehouse needs a larger computing resource whereas data mart needs less computing resources.
