Hacktivism is a cybercrime that combines activism and hacking operations. The attackers launch the attack to make political or religious statements or declarations about a certain government or nation-state. These attackers are ideologically motivated and seek to spread their agenda through compromising their target’s system. They further expose sensitive and critical information that has the potential of damaging the reputation of their victim. Besides, hacktivism attacks may target individuals, corporations, governmental organizations and nation-state.
The perpetrators launch their sophisticated attacks and publish damaging information about an individual or organization by using pseudonyms or sometimes anonymously. And this makes difficult to hold them accountable for their cybercrimes. Moreover, the attackers do not usually reside within the same jurisdiction of their victims. They rather launch the attack from another state and makes to file legal lawsuits against perpetrators.
