This is a legacy attack occur due to implementation weaknesses and is no more prevalent in today’s networks. It is sometimes referred to as “IP fragment Overrun”, which implies that it is an attack that happens due to oversized ping packets. This was common with old operating systems and is not common in modern platforms. Moreover, this specifically occurs when you send a ping packet that is more than 65,536 bytes in size. This violates the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) and may cause the system to crash.
