Security Assertion Markup Language or SAML in short is an XML-based open standard used to exchange authentication and authorization information between entities or organizations. Moreover, it is commonly used in federated identity management and SSO-based services.
SAML is consisted of three roles and four primary components. The three roles of SAML are:
- Identity Provider (IdP)
- Service Provider (SP)
- Subject or Principal
In addition, SAML contains the following four components:
- Assertions
- Protocols
- Bindings
- Profiles
