An SNMP is a protocol used to collect network health and status from routers, switches, firewalls, VPN, and so on devices. It further helps network administrators to collect statistics and configuration information about network devices’ overall performance. Moreover, the SNMP is helpful tool to record actions of entities and thereby supports to enforce accountability. SNMPv3 is the secure version and earlier versions are all deprecated. It provides encryption and user authentications services as well.
SNMP has centralized management station that collects information about different network and endpoint devices, including their configuration situations. It has the following three major components:
- SNMP Manager: A software which runs in the centralized management console used to displace the collected information about the network devices
- SNMP Agent: A software that runs at the peripheries or specific nodes whose data is being collected.
- Management Information Base (MIB): This is the database of all the collected information.
