RMAN uses either recovery catalog or controlfile of the target database for repository data storage.
The default storage for RMAN repository data ( information on backup sets, data file copy, archive redo logs and database structures) is the control file of the target database. But the repository data can also be stored in a separate database in a recovery catalog.
The advantage of having a separate database (recovery catalog ) for RMAN repository data is that; in case of a lost of control file. Besides that, a single recovery catalog can store information for multiple target databases and can also store RMAN scripts.
